3 Signs You're Following Emotion Instead of Truth

The world tells us to follow our hearts. The Bible tells us something very different.

Emotions aren't evil. God created them. But they were never meant to lead your life. Feelings change with your circumstances, while truth remains the same. When emotion becomes your compass, you're likely headed in the wrong direction.

The first sign is that you react instead of respond. James reminds us, "Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry..." (James 1:19–20). When emotions are in control, we lash out, assume the worst, or speak before we've listened. Wisdom slows down. Truth pauses before it speaks.

The second sign is that you make decisions in the heat of the moment. Proverbs 19:2 warns us, "Desire without knowledge is not good—how much more will hasty feet miss the way!" Emotions demand immediate action, but godly wisdom values patience. Many of life's biggest regrets aren't made after careful thought—they're made in moments of impulse.

Finally, you chase feelings instead of God's purpose. Paul writes, "Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh." (Galatians 5:16). Following Christ isn't about doing what feels right; it's about doing what is right. Feelings come and go. God's truth doesn't.

The next time you're faced with a difficult decision, ask yourself one simple question:

Am I following my emotions, or am I following God's truth?

One changes with your mood. The other changes your life.

Truth. No Apologies.
